Despite recent advances, venous thromboembolic disease continues to be a major source
of morbidity and mortality. Pulmonary embolism (PE) accounts for up to 240,000 deaths
per year in the United States and is caused by lower extremity deep vein thrombosis
(DVT) in the vast majority of cases.
